I bet you can guess by now that the Internet connections have been hard to get.

My time here has felt like magic. It seems like it is the season when I get to see the results of such hard work over time. Thank you for everyone who has been there telling me to keep going. I wish you could have felt my heart when I walked into our Beauty Salon and saw the women there doing hair. It seems like just yesterday we were telling them how to take a shower and use a toilet and now they are BUSINESS WOMEN!!!!!!

Whew! I’m here and still not sure if I can get on the internet.

My trip started out with quite an adventure. I arrived in Denver from Colorado Springs 30 minutes before the scheduled time. The flight to Washington DC was on time. I boarded the airplane and sat inside for four hours, waiting for the mechanical failures to be fixed. Finally, five hours after the scheduled departure we changed planes and the trip continued.

Great news! The little girl was examined at the Fistula Hospital and her problem is not fistula just a horrible infection. As terrible as this is it’s still so much better than a fistula. She is smart and cute and I really believe that she will be fine later in life.

I’m not sure where to start:) I’ve been busy with so many fun and good things. My favorite is that we are close to opening our Beauty Salons (two) I’m starting the training on facials and make overs on Monday. The place is cute and is right next to a Pool Hall. Maybe the women can get the men to play pool and stay longer for their beauty treatments.

I feel like a movie star. I had an interview this morning with the local television station (I will be on the news tonight) Then I am eating lunch with a woman I admire, Anne Clark, she is the wife of the ambassador of the European Community in Ethiopia and she is amazing in her own right. Then the ambassador of Spain and a woman from the Spanish Parliament are coming to visit the Trampled Rose. I had some time with them yesterday and I feel such respect for women who have done such big things. I wonder where they got their vision. Plus the sun is out and my house is clean. I think I’m on my way to a great day!

I just conducted an entire business meeting in Amharic!! We analyzed profit and expense and divided our daily portions! I guess that goes to show what you can do when you’re forced.

I’ve learned a new meaning to “flea bitten” I’m covered! I’m scratching with my feet and my hands. If you see any dog with this problem, really, have more compassion. If any of you know where I can buy a flea necklace, let me know.

It stopped raining!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the funniest thing happen last night. I was on my way to the Sheridan to meet my friends for diner. It is the fanciest hotel in Ethiopia and there are some truly rich people who mingle there. I walked out of my house in my very cute outfit and went to my usual taxi stand. However…. there were some taxis but not a driver anywhere. So… I continued on down the street and couldn’t find a taxi anywhere. It was uncomfortable because it was after dark and I was way overdressed for the area.

October 2nd

It’s still the rainy season. But…. we do have umbrellas. Yesterday I spent some time with the ladies who are opening a beauty salon. Their land lady was very unhappy because they had men over on Sunday afternoon (their brothers I’m sure) and they were listing to music. I had the hardest time not laughing, they are just my kind of girls. Finally we agreed to make a small fence and to trust the girls to have good judgment. They really have all been married and through more than most of us can imagine. I told them the only thing I was angry about was that they didn’t invite me.
